An envelope posted in 1873 from Napier, New Zealand to Cork City, via San Francisco

  • Slight file fold but an attractive and scarce franking
  • Carried on the Steamer ‘Governor Blackall’ of the Hall & Forbes Line
    • This service was initiated on December 22, 1873 and finished in August 1874
    • The mail from New Zealand connected at Fiji with the Sydney-Fiji-Honolulu-San Francisco service run by the Australian Mail Steamship Company
      • This cover travelled by the first sailing of the Hall & Forbes service
      • Cert: RPSL (2006)

Stamps include:

  • New Zealand 1872/73: 2d vermilion, perf. 12½, a horizontal strip of three
  • These are from the famous and much sought after “Chalon Head” series

Postal Marks include:

  • Stamps are tied by numeral “11” obliterators in black
  • Reverse markings include:
    • Napier c.d.s. (Nov 25)
    • Wellington transit c.d.s. (Dec 12)
    • Cork arrival c.d.s. (Feb 17, 1874) in black.
